MOVIE REVIEW: TANGLED (Nathan Greno, Byron Howard, 2010)

I initially wasn’t a fan of this Rapunzel retelling but another viewing made me really like it. It hewed closely to the typical Disney classic and even the songs were good and not annoying. Inasmuch as I love 3D animation, nothing can still beat the traditional 2D. Oh, and don’t get me started on the lantern scene.

MOVIE REVIEW: POLICE STORY 2013 (Sheng Ding, 2013)

My notes on Police Story 2013:

1. Wait, I thought Jackie Chan had retired and his last movie was Chinese Zodiac? Well, I guess not.

2. You watch a Chan movie for the stunts and you never ever get disappointed. He’s in his late 50’s and he still kicks ass (literally).

3. The movie was probably meant to be seen in 3D with all the broken shards and shrapnel and wood shavings flying towards the audience.

4. Jackie Chan does drama! And he’s actually good in his crying scenes. Several girls seated next to me had to reach out for their hankies.

5. The plot was preposterous to say the least with a character going to all lengths for what turned out to be a simple misunderstanding. (Don’t worry, a plotless movie cannot be spoiled.)

6. Stay for the end credits. One scene showed Chan’s dedication to his work. I hope he never retires.

JURASSIC PARK (Steven Spielberg, 1993)

One of my all-time favorite films. Seeing it made me feel like a kid again. I’ve visited Isla Nublar countless times before.

Watching Jurassic Park on the big screen again was the best experience I’ve had in cinemas this year. The 3D conversion didn’t add much, though.

If anything, it muted the colors and made the night scenes barely watchable. Dinosaurs will always be menacing regardless of format, though.

I’ve always preferred Spielberg the fun movie magician over Spielberg the serious film historian.
